OUR DAM(N) NATION

We are a nation with mixed priorities
Which is causing us a lot of grief.
We pay heavily for rice and other commodities
While a SIM card is distributed for free

A nation where pizza delivery reaches you faster
Than an emergency ambulance or police assistance does
during times of natural calamities or man – made disaster
While people are found littered dying thus

We are a nation with great values and mores
Which are now completely forgotten and ignored
Where tycoon owned, bookie enslaved teams make crores
While the poor starve despite bountiful harvests stored

A nation where condoms and underwear
are sold in air conditioned show rooms and malls
Along with valuable designer foot wear
While vegetables are sold in dirty pavement stalls

We are a nation rather strange
Where private infrastructure is built overnight
While public infrastructure of any kind or range
Takes decades to finally see the light of day or night

A nation with many malls and sky-rise buildings
Where the rich and famous rub shoulders and everything else
While neighbouring slums and ghetto dwellings
Are ignored and cold shouldered since only poverty there dwells

We are a decadent nation indeed
For railway tracks are adorned with naked bottoms
While nearby penthouses have many toilets which are not in need
And remain unadorned of human bottoms

A nation where doctors are creating hospitals
To treat all illness and disease
Have turned them into five star hotels
For their minds have become diseased

We are a nation of attention seekers
Who will do anything scandalous or corrupt
to get our names into the TV and news papers
rather than do good and the evil thereby disrupt

A nation where politicians who are the servants of the nation
Are busy looting the people they claim to represent and serve
And supposedly patriotic in their public service for the nation
They draw a salary for looting the people they serve

We are a nation that is being conned of its wealth
By two brothers who allegedy fight against each other
But then in cohorts with their mother in stealth
Are cleverly looting the land which we call our mother

A nation where we talk constantly about corruption
Which we claim to fight against and change
Until in our daily lives there is some disruption
And then we grease palms and say keep the change

We are truly a nation of intelligentsia
where students with a bare pass get into premier institutions
While the meritorious students of every year
know not where to vent their frustrations

A nation where loans for consumable luxuries are cheap
While the poor who want loans for their education
Are plunged into debt with interests so steep
Is there any hope? Will there ever be any salvation?
